Site-specific installation from Japanese knotweed
with the help of Ráhel Monory

In an open call of the Derkovits scholarship, funded in 1955, that is juried at the Kunsthalle Budapest, now run by the MMA, a right-wing art organization taking over the state-financed cultural institutions. I made an ephemeral construction on the installation day of the jury show.
I built it in front of a national pantheon’s partially demolished installation from a previous exhibition.
I built a greek temple (or Kunsthalle) like facade from Japanese knotweed bundles. The fluting, the vertical lines on columns were originally made intending to look like bundles of plant stems. Bundles, in Latin the fasces is used in the fable to explain why the community can kill an individual in ancient Rome. This symbol later became popular among the Italian fascist, who named themselves after it. The fasces is a common architectural element in Rome, and also in other empires like the United States, where it appears the Oval Office and in the Lincoln Memorial.
