Three Khazars
Site-specific installation on the plinth of the central monument of the Heroes Square

I made an intervention with the monument depicting the seven chieftains of the seven Hungarian tribes, the ancestors of Hungarians. This early history of the people we retrospectively call Hungarians are a battleground for political ideologies. The sculptor depicted a homogenous group, based on unreliable sources, and his imagination. I added three more tribes that were mentioned in Constantine VII Flavius Porphyrogenitus’ text the Administration of the Empire as Khazars in the alliance. This source is also questionable, but it describes the ancestors of the Hungarians as a multicultural alliance, not as a homogenous group. The diversity of the alliance is scientifically proven and aligned with my artistic imagination.
I placed three tiny riding figures that I made of aluminum sheet under the hoof of the big bronze horses. The wind could bend my figures, and kept them in constant motion.
The installation was only visible for those who climbed up to the plinth.
