Five channel video installation with voiceovers
with: Gábor Kristóf

— White Night Festival, Kosice, 2012

We made an experimental video on Juraj Jánošík, the 17th-century Slovak highwayman. We followed the changes of the figure in costume dramas made in different eras where he is depicted as an anti-Hungarian freedom fighter than as an anti-bourgeois hero, and to the more recent Robin Hood–esque version. We mixed the fiction of the movies with footages from the news of the Slovak television, for example, the march of the Slovak olympic team in folk art inspired dresses in the opening, or the burning of the castle of Krásna Hôrka, and a neo-nazi raid against the Roma community living next to the castle because they were accused of causing the fire in public television.
We recorded voice overs with five people from Kosice to tell their personal opinions about the video. We interviewed among others an actor from a Jánošík movie and the head of the local Hungarian cultural center.
